Building a warm-up set that isn't boring

The warm-up is the hardest slot and the one most often given to the least experienced person in the building. The brief is genuinely difficult: be compelling without escalating.

Interest and energy are separate dials

The failure mode is treating them as one. A quiet set is not automatically a boring one, and the way out is texture and strangeness rather than volume and tempo. Weird records at low energy hold attention far better than safe records at medium energy.

Leave the obvious tools alone

Every record that would work as a peak-time weapon is a record you are stealing from whoever plays after you. The discipline of the warm-up is spending only from a budget nobody else wants to spend from.

A great warm-up makes the next DJ look better than they are. That is the job, and it is worth doing well.

Practically

Search with Obscurity Mode on and the energy filter capped low. Filter for instrumental. Sort by rarity rather than match. What surfaces will be records that nobody in the room has heard, which is precisely the currency the first two hours run on.
