Reading a track by feel, not by genre

Genre tags describe where a record came from. They say almost nothing about what it does to a room. Two records both tagged "deep house" can be twenty years and one entire emotional register apart.

Energy is not tempo

A 128 BPM record can be calm and a 118 BPM record can be relentless. Energy is a function of density, transient sharpness and how much space the arrangement leaves. Tempo is one input among several, and often the least important one.

Groove is where the swing sits

Groove is the relationship between the grid and the parts that refuse to sit on it. Slightly late hats, a bassline pushing ahead, a shaker doing something the drum machine did not ask for. Two records with the same groove lock together even across genres. Two records with opposing swing fight each other even in the same key at the same tempo.

Mood and texture

Mood is the harmonic and melodic colour — where the record sits between bleak and euphoric. Texture is the surface: tape saturation, digital glare, room noise, the grain of the sample. Texture is the dimension diggers feel most strongly and describe least well, and it is usually the real reason a record sounds expensive or cheap.
